Forward radar in bumper

Quick question about the forward radar sensor that's tucked into the front bumper on the newer Hyundai Tucsons, mine's a 2022 SEL AWD. I haven't had any issues yet, but I was cleaning up the front end and started wondering how exposed that sensor actually is, in my understanding, it handles things like adaptive cruise and collision avoidance, but it sits right behind that plastic panel in the lower grille, no real protection other than the trim piece, anyone had problems after a bumper tap, I know alignment matters with these, and replacing or even removing the bumper can throw it off, so I'm kind of hesitant to mess with anything near it

Totally fair concern. On the 2022 Tucson, that radar unit is mounted low behind the lower grille, and yeah, it's vulnerable to debris, and even light bumper taps. A misalignment or loose bracket can throw off adaptive cruise and collision warnings.

And yeah, removing the bumper usually requires recalibration. If you're doing any work near it, best to have a shop check alignment afterward to avoid false alerts or system shutdowns.

Burying such a critical safety sensor behind thin plastic with no real protection is reckless design. One minor bump can knock it out of alignment, yet manufacturers still market it as robust technology.

I've got a 2022 Tucson SEL too, and I had a minor bumper tap last fall. Nothing cracked, but it did throw off the radar alignment. My adaptive cruise started acting up until I had the dealer recalibrate it. If you're doing any work near it, definitely avoid removing the bumper unless you're ready for a recalibration.
